Our story begins with the word Ubuntu. Ubuntu, roughly translates to “human kindness”. It is human-ness and the “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”

This strong desire to help others drove Ahmed Varachia to start-up, African Feather. He once asked a small business “What’s your website?” the replay was “It’s just too expensive!” – startled by this he then noticed that small businesses neither had the resources, skills or mindset in an ever changing and challenging IT world, which left them being well, small.

He set out on a goal – to e-enable a single small business a month for free. By using open source technologies, upskilling, educating and training them to use technology within their business in order to drive up sales, streamline processes and move their businesses from being small to becoming great.

He couldn’t just sit back and see African businesses not use simple technologies to become better. With over 15 years experience working in IT, it wasn’t just about giving back, but rather being human and living Ubuntu.

One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity.

Let’s get up Africa, stand up, stand together, work together and do this together.
